After SAS officially joined the SkyTeam alliance on September 1, 2024, Star Alliance is offering their elites the opportunity to stay in their network with a status match to any of their member airlines.

 

SkyTeam Move Completed After Air France-KLM Takes Stake in Airline

Moving to SkyTeam was one of the conditions of Air France-KLM taking nearly 20% of a stake in SAS, helping the airline come out of bankruptcy. With the move becoming official, the airline now has codeshares in place with Air France and KLM, with other SkyTeam airlines expected to join soon.

 

SAS president and CEO Anko van der Werff called the move “the beginning of a new era,” saying “The partnership will open new opportunities for our passengers, expand our global network, and allow us to collaborate closely with like-minded airlines.” For SkyTeam, the alliance says they now become the only group to serve both the northernmost and southernmost airports in the world.

 

However, flyers in the SAS EuroBonus frequent flyer program still have a choice in who to fly with, and Star Alliance is reminding them with a status match in any of the nine participating airlines’ loyalty programs. Elite members in the Silver, Gold, or Diamond tiers can match to equivalent status in Air Canada Aeroplan, Lufthansa Miles and More, United Airlines Mileage Plus, among other programs. The status match offer is available to EuroBonus members through November 30, 2024.

 

If flyers decide to continue their travel with SAS, their status will now be honored across all of the SkyTeam airlines. EuroBonus Silver members will be recognized as Elite members, while Gold and Platinum flyers will get the Elite Plus designator.
