Alaska Airlines has issued a statement to its employees following the decision by the United States Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022. In the statement, Andy Schneider, the carrier’s senior vice president of People, reiterated the airline’s commitment to protecting the wellbeing of employees of both Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, a regional partner of Alaska.
Alaska’s Culture of Care Will Continue
Schneider explained that, despite the court’s ruling, there would be no change to the company’s healthcare benefits. While he acknowledged that the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade – which constitutionally protected a woman’s right to obtain an abortion – was a deeply personal and emotional matter, Scheider stated, “Our culture of care includes ensuring a work environment where everyone feels safe and respected. Regardless of your individual views, this is a time to demonstrate understanding, empathy and kindness for each other.”
“Second, we will continue, just as we always have, to provide employees with extensive benefits to support your health and wellbeing, no matter where you live. This includes reimbursing travel for certain medical procedures and treatments if they are not available where you live. Today’s Supreme Court decision does not change that,” he added.
Schneider concluded his message by urging employees who felt distracted by the ruling to speak to their managers and HR contacts in order to preserve the carrier’s safe onward operation.
Thus far, Alaska Airlines is the only carrier to have made a statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. All other major legacy carriers, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, have not publicly commented on the decision.
