Heading to Rome and looking for a nice, affordable hotel that won’t leave your trip budget in ruins? As part of our cheapo quest to find Europe’s best budget hotels for 2022, we’re excited to list our top eight budget hotels in Rome.
The hotels below have been selected from our list of recommended hotels in Rome. All of these have been visited and inspected by one of our editors, and chosen as a “pick” based upon the following criteria:
• Location: Can you easily reach most of Rome’s central sights by foot? Most of the city’s big draws are clustered together within the historic center. How easy is it to get there from the hotel? Is the hotel easily reachable from Termini, the city’s main train station?
• Average rate: Are the hotel’s rates a good deal? We’re not just looking for the cheapest rooms in town, but the best value. When compared to other hotels in the same category, does this hotel offer a great deal? The average rate listed is compiled from rates we tested for a double room (with private bath) in June through September. Note that these rates will fall substantially in the off season.
• Quality of service, rooms and amenities: Does the quality of the hotel’s rooms and services exceed those of the same category elsewhere in Rome?
• User rating: How have past guests rated this hotel? What issues, if any, have previous guests experienced with the hotel?
• “Special something”: Does this hotel offer something unique that helps it stand out from its competition? This could be a super-friendly proprietor, an extraordinary location, or a cool history.
And finally, we also go with our own instincts. We’ve visited and inspected countless hotels (with budget-friendly rates) in Rome. If a hotel strikes us as a good value, we’re happy to share it with you.

Guestrooms at Marta Guest House have a touch of grandeur.
Marta Guest House
Neighborhood: Vatican & Prati
Average double: €80
The friendly Marta Guest House offers cozy accommodations conveniently located near the Vatican. Each room features a unique style complete with antique furnishings and original tiled floors. Guests enjoy air conditioning, TVs, mini-fridges, minibars, coffee and tea facilities, plus free Wi-Fi and breakfast.
The charming Marta Guest House can be tricky to find, so look for the address rather than a sign for the hotel. It’s tucked away on a side street off of the popular Piazza Cavour.
The Hotel des Artistes adorns each guestroom with gold-framed art.
Hotel des Artistes ***
Neighborhood: North of Termini Station
Average double: €110
For those with an affinity for artistic flair, the Hotel des Artistes is the spot for you. True to its name, this three-star hotel, located north of Termini Station, features rooms and communal spaces adorned with art. It offers both private rooms and hostel options for guests. No matter the room, you’ll be situated a 20-minute walk to Rome’s historic center.
Aside from thoughtful art, each room offers air conditioning, TVs, phones, safes and breakfast. You can save a few euros by booking one of three rooms located in the hotel’s annex.

Suore di S Elisabetta
Neighborhood: South of Termini Station
Average double: €85
This pristine and friendly convent, located directly next to the Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica, is heaven on earth for budget travelers who don’t mind an 11 p.m. curfew (or sleeping under a crucifix). The convent offers 45 tidy little guestrooms, all of which are simply furnished and super clean.
The cheapest rooms have a shared bath, while those with a private bathroom have either a bathtub or shower (our price above is for a room with private bath). Don’t miss the rooftop terrace (see photo), or the breakfast room (included in room rate), which is topped with a spectacular chandelier. Important: The guesthouse strictly enforces an 11 p.m. curfew.
Relax on the plant-covered terrace at Hotel Grifo.
Hotel Grifo ***
Neighborhood: Monti
Average double: €98
At the three-star Hotel Grifo, you’ll find no shortage of terraces, between the communal fifth-floor terrace and the private terraces shared between two rooms. Here, the staff is friendly and the amenities are aplenty. Plus, it’s an easy walk from the hotel to the Colosseum.
Guestrooms have been updated with new wallpaper, tiled floors, and furniture plus restored crown moldings. Creature comforts include air conditioning, TVs, mini-fridges, and spacious private bathrooms. Note that three rooms are located across the street in an annex, but these rooms offer the same amenities, including free breakfast and Wi-Fi.
You can’t help but feel welrome, er, welcome at the Welrome.
Welrome Hotel **
Neighborhood: North of Termini Station
Average double: €110
Although its rates are a smidge higher than some of the other hotels packing the streets around the train station, the family-run Welrome Hotel offers a list of extra amenities and thoughtful service (from gregarious owner Mary) that keeps guests coming back.
Each of her seven rooms is named after a Roman monument and is outfitted in tiled floors, a table and chairs, cream walls and green bedspreads. All rooms have air conditioning, TVs, telephones, safes, tea kettles, and mini-fridges. The Welrome makes a comfy and convenient home base.
The stylish Hotel Navona is located about five gelato licks away from the Piazza Navona.
Hotel Navona **
Neighborhood: Near the Piazza Navona
Average double: €128
The two-star Hotel Navona boasts one of the most central addresses of any of the hotels we recommend in Rome. It’s just one block east of Piazza Navona, two blocks west of the Pantheon, and a five-minute stroll north of the Campo de’ Fiori. Along with the nearby Hotel Mimosa (below), this is about as central as you’re going to find for an affordable hotel.
The Navona’s 51 rooms vary in size and price. Thus, if you’re going for a cheap “Economy” room, expect it to be small. Regular double rooms are of typical European hotel dimensions. All are bright, with light-colored walls, and beds with leather headboards and modern coverings. But it’s really all about the location here.
The Mimosa is a simple place with an incredible location.
Hotel Mimosa *
Neighborhood: Near the Pantheon
Average double: €91
The one-star Hotel Mimosa is among our favorite budget hotels in Rome. With affordable rates, nice rooms, a friendly staff and a location (literally) steps from the Pantheon, really, what’s not to love?
Located on the second floor of an ancient Roman building, the 11 guest rooms line one long corridor that shoots off of a brightly-lit lobby (pictured above). Rooms vary in size and shape but all are clean and modern, with freshly painted walls, framed artwork and Ikea-style furnishings. All rooms include air conditioning, TV, and free Wi-Fi.
The Panda is a budget option located at the base of the Spanish Steps.
Hotel Panda **
Neighborhood: Near the Spanish Steps
Average double: €91
The Hotel Panda is a convenient little cheapo located in the heart of an area better known for its fashion boutiques than for its budget hotels. Basic, clean and welcoming, the two-star hotel is just a one-minute saunter from the base of the Spanish Steps.
The Panda’s 28 guest rooms are on the tight side and won’t win any awards for designer flair, but they’re comfortable and clean. Air conditioning is available in the summer months, and all rooms have TV, a phone, and free Wi-Fi.
